Research problem

Traffic circulation in Algerian cities has become increasingly problematic. In addition to significant congestion caused by the rise in vehicle ownership and the difficulties of ensuring smooth intra-urban traffic flow, there are numerous risks to both motorists and pedestrians. To address this issue, we propose a project dedicated to intra-urban traffic problems, based on an analysis of the current situation in order to propose an optimal circulation plan, in accordance with the constraints identified by public authorities.

Within the framework of this specific project, the aim is to conduct a study on urban traffic in the Oran conurbation, to identify various related issues such as traffic flows, parking, and driver behaviour. To achieve this, we have utilised various types of satellite imagery and maps to update the road network mapping, ground-based or on-board sensors integrated into a monitoring service to measure flows, and user surveys to analyse individual behaviour regarding traffic.

This theme of urban traffic is part of a research programme proposed by our team to design and implement a Geographical Information Platform for the study and harmonious management of Algerian urban spaces.

The objective is to structure multi-source and multi-scale information to undertake studies on numerous and varied themes concerning the Algerian city. These scientific studies provide decision-makers and policymakers with invaluable assistance in urban planning decisions.

This research programme, which will be carried out in several stages, will eventually facilitate the analysis of numerous urban themes. The following diagram presents the platform, divided into three layers: Data, Acquisition/Processing, and Services.

The Data Layer: Contains spatio-temporal, multi-source, and multi-scale data from various origins. The Extraction and Processing Layer: Comprises different methodologies for acquisition and processing that can be utilised across the platform’s various themes. The Services Layer: Presents a non-exhaustive range of applications that can be mobilised in any urban development and planning strategy.
