Summary

It sometimes happens that an individual carries several names throughout their life. While a single name is sufficient, the newborn is identified at birth by a given name. Over time, this person may be called by other names assigned by their social environment, which may become more commonly used than the official name recorded in the family register. It may even happen that a person is known by their original name only when it is combined with the name given by their surroundings, whereas a single name was once sufficient to identify the individual.

Thus, a strong relationship is formed between the name and its bearer.
Another issue concerns the existence of neutral names that have no particular colour, shape or connotation, as they rely on numerical codes such as identity card numbers, examination numbers, telephone numbers, prisoner identification numbers, vehicle serial numbers, or numbers worn by athletes.

One of the key questions addressed by the study of names is the issue of freedom. Although we feel free when choosing names, these names carry implicit values that guide the choice within a limited space, without us being fully aware of this constraint.

Since the problem of “freedom and implicit value” deserves particular attention, it has been selected as the main focus of this research.

The choice of a name in a society, tribe or social group is governed by two elements:

The first is the apparent freedom in this choice.

The second is implicit: the connection between this apparent freedom and an underlying value that influences the choice of the name and limits freedom within a space that appears free but remains influenced by a certain symbolic attraction, which may be called the motivating value of the choice.

The diversity of meanings and connotations of names is certainly linked to the diversity of events and social realities in any society. With the development of media and recent social transformations, there has also been a qualitative evolution in the choice of first names, often associated with meanings related to beauty and aesthetics.
