Manuscript Heritage : Joseph Désparmet Manuscript Collection

Written folklore is considered one of the pillars of Algerian folklore, because it plays an important role in the transmission and preservation of material and immaterial folklore from one generation to another, therefore it constitutes a wealth and a constructive factor. if one works to make the most of it and study its various subjects. In addition to the various folkloric materials found in the Algerian regions, there are other forms of heritage elements recorded in certain manuscripts, archives, including what was published in notebooks that were published during the colonial period, and whose some are still locked away in European drawers and libraries. Among the most important Orientalists who have dedicated their writings and worked to document the Algerian heritage of customs, traditions, beliefs, oral expressions and other subjects that make us recognize the richness of Algeria with its popular legacies is the Orientalist " Joseph Desparmet", who greatly contributed to the documentation and codification of some of the practices and behaviors of Algerian society based on customs and traditions. In this way, he left his mark on the studies of the social, cultural and linguistic history of certain Algerian regions - in particular the regions of Blida and Tlemcen -. All this with the aim of embodying a historical and cultural reality that deserves to be preserved and studied. In addition to the works written by Joseph Deparmet in his writings, in particular the Journal Africain, there are a few other works which are still unpublished manuscripts preserved in European libraries. From this point of view came the objective of presenting this project, through which we try to investigate and rewrite the manuscript of "Joseph Desparmet" on the popular tale of which we have obtained part in the library of the University from Aix- Marseille.
