Languages and Discourse : Cultural and Artistic Expressions in Algeria "LDCAEA"

Project type : National Research Programs (PNR)
Theme : Literary and Artistic Languages and Expressions
Summary

Our project, which builds upon previous research on cultural and artistic expressions in Algeria, aims to explain the socio-cultural climate surrounding the emergence of new cultural and artistic expressions. It examines the cultural morphology (creators, producers, audiences, etc.) and sociolinguistic aspects, placing them within the dynamics of urban transformation. Integrated into an urban space where the city’s cosmopolitan dimension offers stability (residency) and facilities for youth production (producers, consumers, activity spaces), these artistic and cultural expressions are more present than ever and reflect a shift toward new forms of urban behavior.

Driven by the massive adoption of mobile phones, the development of the Internet (chats, forums, webcams), the ease of accessing satellite channels, the influx of foreigners (Europeans, Chinese, etc.) into our cities, and the seasonal return of the "Beur" community every summer, Algerian culture is moving beyond its local specificities and drawing inspiration from global cultural content. In its first phase, the project focuses on three forms of production:

- Oral productions: Youth music (Rai, Rap, and football chants).

- Graphic expressions: Graffiti, tags, caricatures, etc.

- Performance: Theater, short and feature films, music videos, and shows.

Objectives:

- Observe youth interest in artistic expressions.

- Determine the impact of these expressions on youth behavior.

- Study linguistic variation and language creativity related to these cultural and artistic expressions.

- Establish a variationist relationship between different age groups.

- Decipher the identity claims of youth (in Algeria and France) through cultural expressions.

- Organize scientific meetings to update our research methods.

- Collect life stories regarding the practices of singers, comic book artists, caricaturists, etc.

Actions Taken / Planned:

- Material collection.

- Recording interviews with key actors and organizing scientific meetings to introduce them to the general public.

- Corpus analysis.

- Publication.

Expected Results / Perspectives:

- From a scientific perspective: The project will attempt to explain how Algerian art and culture have coped with globalization while preserving the cultural specificities of a multifaceted Algeria.

- Preserving cultural and artistic heritage: Through the publication of articles and books to provide written documentation for future generations curious about the culture and art of their country.
