Charity and Social Action in Colonial Algeria. A Socio-historical Study of the Oranais Region (1900-1950)

Project type : Institutional Projects (PE)
Theme : Families, Women, Children, Elderly, and the Issue of Solidarity
Summary

How did charitable and social action societies develop in colonial Algeria ? How did they support the Muslim population in a context marked by exclusion, poverty and marginalization?

How did charitable organizations mobilize in the field ? What was the difference between charitable and social action associations in colonial Algeria, particularly in the region of Oran ?
These are the main questions this research project aims to address.

By studying the charitable work carried out by the associations, this project aims to shed light on the dynamics created within Algerian society on the one hand, and the relationships forged with the colonial administration on the other, in terms of the management of goods, donations and administration.

It also aims to analyze the conditions that led to the birth of a "Muslim conscience" acting in a new temporality that marks the interest of notables, clerics and politicians in social issues and the living conditions of the Algerian population.

The third objective of this project is to understand the role played by charitable associations in structuring the social and cultural field, through their work and the l trajectories of their main leaders.
